| The CDA China Clay hopper
based on the HAA design and built in 1987. The
model.... from Hornby, two variations in the picture
below. The left CDA wagon is the more recent model,
where as the CDA on the right is the earlier version
from Hornby without the extra details, and sprung
buffers. |

Inspiration
came from the fantastic
Website
by Paul Bartlett, that has plenty of Prototype
pictures for the modeller. Name a wagon & Paul's
probably got it on his site, I
recommend you bookmark the site, as you might find it
quite useful for future projects.
Weathering the CDA was, and is quite
simple really, as the over spill and general dust of the
China Clay is all white, It can be achieved by dry
brushing Matt White Humbrol (34) (Now
discontinued) After a coat of the white paint, I
brushed the paint in down strokes giving it the
impression the rain has ran the clay down the side of
the hopper. After looking at various ECC CDA wagons on
the Internet, I noticed that data panels, and even the
ECC logo had been wiped clean(ish), so an ample amount
of white spirits was used to thin the white paint around
them, cleaning it in the process.
Lighter weathered areas of the wagon
where also given the white spirits treatment, making it
look like a layer of powder. White spirits was also used
to create clean streaks, where rain run off has Occurred |
