Well here
we go then , the start of my very first Respray. We
could end up with a master piece... Or we could end up
with an expensive mess, either way its all experience,
and theres no better way to learn, than by your
mistakes.. So I'm told.
Class 37.678 is in the firing line for
this repaint, being in Railfreight Red Stripe livery it
was alittle before the era I like to model in, so was
prime candidate for the job.
I took the Body off the chassis, and
removed all the windows, including engine room windows
X4, I've also taken out the little red marker lights
from each end of the locomotive, as I hope to install
real lighting at some stage. The PCB boards either end
of the body where also taken out, these hold the
lighting in place, and can be unscrewed. |
 |
As seen in
the above picture, I sanded the numbering, and
Railfreight logos, including the BR logo, this is just
to make sure nothing shows through after the primer has
been added
Shown below is the body after priming..
All is looking quite good so far. All
thats needed now is the paint for the two tone grey, and
the yellow ends.. Not to mention - numbering, Transrail
Transfers & nameplate. |
 |
Transrail
Livery:
Roofs: RM 201: Executive Dark Grey
Upper bodysides: RM 245: Flint Grey
Lower bodysides: RM 206: Rail Grey
Front: RM 202: Warning Panel Yellow
Bought the above this morning. Thought
it would be quite an easy job, but turned out to be
quite something else. I had done a bit of Airbrushing
before, but this was really only for weathering
locomotives not actually painting them. Its a whole new
ball game. I've now learnt its all about the thinning of
the paint, and the spray set up. If either of these are
incorrect for the job, Loads go wrong. I've ended up
using the whole tub of RM 245: Flint Grey
attempting to get the correct paint/thinner mixture. I'm
sure there's an easier way to do this, one would hope
Anyhow, I did have enough paint left in the Airbrush
tub, to complete the top half of the Transrail Two Tone
Grey, and its currently drying. Seems to be alright, but
may need another coat tomorrow. |
 |
So far so
good.. The railmatch paints seem to be a little Glossy,
but I hope to get rid of this once the transfers and
matt varnish has been applied. |

Such slow progression on this, I've finally got back
into the spirit of it. Lower bodyside Rail Grey was
applied and given two coats, which has gone on
fantastically.. Finally got used to the airbrush now.
Black around the doors and windows, also the bonnet. The
roof is next to be sprayed, then I'll have the fun of
applying the transfers and nameplate. Oooow! I'm nearly
there! |

37412 Driver John Elliot almost completed, name plates
have to be added. I'm very happy with the results, and
its sort of got me into respraying locomotives. I've
learnt quite a bit while doing this respray. One
definite lesson learned has to be, to think things
through before I jump in and do it.
I've been reading up on DRS class
20's... And last week there was an article in Model Rail
on modelling a DRS class 20.. Needless to say I've read
it 100 times over. Just need to push myself into buying
two class 20's from Bachmann, then attack them with
paint stripper!. |
