Putting theory into practice - 4/4/06
On "April fools day" I laid all of the trackwork down from Digger Viaduct to the cutting, I have kept to the original plan (above) as hoped. I have used a home made trackwork width jig, to get the correct width between tracks on all of the layout. Its a tried and tested top tip, and I recommend it.
On this plan as mentioned, the new platforms will be either side of the loops, only I think we might not have enough space. So an extension to the concrete trackbase might be needed one side. Next on the list of things to do, will be:-
  • Adding jump leads to the rail joins.
  • Building Concrete Platform Base(s)
  • Building Signal Box Base
  • Re-building the road bridge south of the station
  • Installing Isolated sections on loop sections x4

Wallsey Heath work! - 30/4/06
A job for Paul Bonnell (pictured below), Wallsey heath has remained with its original wooden trackbase, and when we built the main lines concrete trackbase I always said we'll leave the Branch line for another day, Yesterday was that day! And the tedious job has been given to Paul, So far he has taken up the wooden trackbase, and track, from Ferndale. The station platform area is to retain its wooden trackbase as its a different type of wood, and will last a few more years yet! Plus I didn't really feel like relaying the platforms, because the PECO platform edging costs money, & once they are taken up the edging may snap in the process, and I don't want to take that risk!
We'll be using the same method of trackbase as the mainline, Concrete base and wooden spacers.

The two track locomotive sidings (to the left of the bottom picture) may be extended to form a freight sidings of some sort, as the freight on the mainline never really has anywhere to go, But like every plan this maybe decided against!
On taking up the Points we noticed that some of the Point springs actually rusted and snapped, this is a sure lesson to cover up the points with something after they have been used, to keep water out! This is obviously a common thing as this flaw has been mentioned on the forum with other Garden Railways in this gauge! I'm under the impression that if you contact Peco, they do have spare Point Springs?

Wallsey Heath Update 19/05/06
This update is a little late, as most of this work was done, a week or so ago. The trench for the trackbase has been dug from Ferndale to Wallsey Heath. We thought that it might be a good idea to dig a little deeper on the Branch, and add more gravel (Pea Shingle) to help the drainage.
Paul has installed trunking running from the shed, to a box at Wallsey Heath, then from the Wallsey Heath box, down underneath the concrete trackbase (still to be built) to a box at Ferndale. Both boxes, will house connector blocks, and wires will leave them to Isolated Sections, station lighting etc. Paul was initially given the job of trackbase renewal, but now his job role has grown to electrical engineer ;} At the moment we hope to build a Signal Box type panel in the shed, and all the isolated sections can then be controlled from there.
